Learn more about this essential raw material and explore AMINO&#8217;s comprehensive range of products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the various chemical components used in the formulation of flexible polyurethane foams, amines\u2014key catalysts for the reaction between isocyanates and water\u2014are fundamental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To produce foam, the polyurethane polymer is expanded by the introduction of gas bubbles. A convenient source of gas is carbon dioxide, generated from the reaction of an isocyanate group with water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Figure I \u2013 Chemical reaction of amine and isocyanate generating CO2 for foam expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intermediate product of this reaction is thermally unstable carbamic acid, which spontaneously decomposes into an amine and carbon dioxide. The diffusion of carbon dioxide into pre-nucleated bubbles in the reacting medium causes expansion, resulting in foam. Further reaction between the amine and additional isocyanate produces a disubstituted urea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amines are organic bases formed by replacing one, two, or three hydrogen atoms in ammonia (NH3) with carbon chains. Thus, the functional group of amines can be one of the three shown below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Figure II \u2013 Functional groups of amines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read also:<\/strong> <em><a href=\"Scorching: Internal yellowing of flexible foam blocks\">Scorching: Internal yellowing of flexible foam blocks<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Classification of Amines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the number of hydrogen atoms replaced, amines are classified as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Primary amines:<\/strong> 1 hydrogen replaced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secondary amines:<\/strong> 2 hydrogens replaced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tertiary amines:<\/strong> 3 hydrogens replaced<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tertiary amines are the most commonly used catalysts in the production of flexible polyurethane foams. These can be divided into four categories based on their effects on foam processability and final properties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gelling or polymerization catalysts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blowing catalysts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delayed-action catalysts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skin curing catalysts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reactive catalysts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Table I \u2013 Types of tertiary amines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>CATALYST<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>CHARACTERISTICS\/APPLICATION<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA)<\/td><td>Reactive blowing catalyst, low-cost liquid with minimal odor, used in flexible and rigid foams.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Diaminobicyclooctane (DABCO) or triethylenediamine (TEDA)<\/td><td>Gelling catalyst, water-soluble solid used in all types of polyurethane.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCHA)<\/td><td>Low-cost liquid with strong odor, used in rigid foams, balancing gelling and blowing reactions.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>bis-(2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether (BDMAEE)<\/td><td>Excellent blowing catalyst, low-odor liquid used in flexible block and molded foams.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>bis-(2-dimethylaminoethyl) ether ethoxylated (BDMAEEE)<\/td><td>Reactive blowing amine for molded flexible foams.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>2-(2-dimethylaminoethoxy)-ethanol (DMAEE)<\/td><td>Reactive blowing amine for low-density flexible foams.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>N-ethylmorpholine<\/td><td>Skin curing catalyst, volatile liquid with low viscosity used in molded flexible foams.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>N,N,N\u2019,N\u2019,N\u2019\u2019-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)<\/td><td>Blowing catalyst used in flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid foams, ensuring excellent flow at the start of the reaction.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reducing Odor in Foams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some amines impart residual odor to the foam, limiting their use in applications like mattresses and upholstered furniture. Using more volatile amines can reduce odor but may also affect curing due to rapid catalyst loss.
